ARCHITECTURE

The figure presents CREATOR architecture. CREATOR comprises four different modules: reasoning, knowledge base, evaluation and metacontrol.

The reasoning module is responsible for problem elaboration, retrieval of relevant cases and adaptation of cases. In CREATOR the retrieval processes are driven by the adaptation mechanisms, which does not happen in most of the case-based design systems where the adaptation is driven by the retrieval.

The knowledge base comprises the case base, general domain knowledge and memory structure. Hierarchy of functions, structures and substances are used as general domain knowledge. This is used for several purposes one of which is the building of the memory structure. The memory structure has two main goals. One is two index cases; the other is to allow space exploration.

The evaluation module comprises two different parts. The internal validation also called verification, which is performed by the system. The internal validation determines if the new design complies with the functional specifications and constraints. The external validation evaluates the novelty of new designs and is done by the user.

The metacontrol module controls and coordinates all the modules.

The evaluation module and adaptation processes have not yet been implemented in CREATOR, which will be done in a near future. Until now the system is working as an aiding system.
