The purpose of this work is the development of a computational model for imaginative reasoning through the construction of a system capable of imaginative reasoning (the IM-RECIDE, acronym for IMaginative-REasoning with Cases Imperfectly DEscribed). We use a Case-Based Reasoning approach. What is imaginative reasoning ? How many stages are there when we have imaginative ideas ? These are some of the questions arising to anyone that tries to model the human capacity of imagination. But some work is done in this area. Ashwin Ram says that creative ideas stem from a strategic control over the ordinary reasoning mechanisms. Janet Kolodner e Linda Wills describe three important phases in creative reasoning: enumeration of alternative solutions, reformulation and elaboration of problem specifications, and evaluation of candidate solutions. In our opinion an imaginative system has three characteristics: ability to search a very broad space of knowledge, reasoning processes capable of making that search, and using opportunistic reasoning. Imaginative reasoning can be synthesized in the following equation: In chapter two we present the way that we represent knowledge. The way
that the knowledge is organized is reported in the third chapter. Reasoning
and search mechanisms are described in the chapter four. In the fifth chapter
we discuss opportunistic reasoning and the next chapter describes the system
architecture. Chapter seven presents the domain definition and an example
of IM-RECIDE at work. Results of experiments are presented in chapter eight.
Finally we present the conclusion and future work.
